Alex Eala has etched her name into the record books after clinching the Washington Open title - becoming the first Filipino player ever to win on the WTA Tour.

The 20-year-old produced a stunning comeback in the final against Jessica Pegula, who had taken the opening set before rain forced a delay. Eala regrouped brilliantly and fought back to seal a landmark victory.

Top-20 breakthrough

The triumph propelled Eala eight places up the world rankings to a career-high No 20 - her first time inside the top 20. Yet questions linger over her serve, with statistics placing her outside the top 50 in that department.

Route to the title

Eala's path to glory was anything but straightforward. She dispatched No 2 seed Elina Svitolina, No 3 seed Naomi Osaka, and defending champion Leylah Fernandez en route to the final. That calibre of scalps marks her out as a serious contender heading into the next stretch of the season.

Tactical vulnerabilities

Former player Greg Rusedski has suggested that opponents should look to exploit Eala's serve by winning the toss and putting her under pressure from the opening game. He acknowledged, however, that her baseline positioning and return game remain formidable strengths that more than compensate.
