From the brink of defeat

Zheng Qinwen produced one of the most extraordinary comebacks in recent U.S. Open history on Saturday, clawing back from 5-0 down in the deciding set to stun No. 22 seed Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5.

The 2024 Olympic champion looked all but beaten. Keys had dominated the opener and held match point in the decider. Then something shifted.

Seven games in a row

Zheng, who came through qualifying and admitted she was not feeling fully healthy, reeled off seven consecutive games to complete a scarcely believable turnaround. It was a display of sheer willpower that left the New York crowd stunned.

Keys, meanwhile, crumbled at the worst possible moment. She racked up 23 unforced errors by the time the final ball landed, gifting Zheng opportunity after opportunity as her once-commanding lead evaporated.

What comes next

Zheng now advances to the fourth round, where she will meet either 2022 champion Iga Świątek or Czech player Marie Bouzkova. On this form - and with this mentality - few would bet against her causing further problems.
