Naomi Osaka battled through a gruelling encounter with Elise Mertens to reach the fourth round of the US Open, prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 - and even she couldn't quite believe it.
"I'm literally shocked that I won this match," Osaka admitted afterwards, acknowledging the frustrations that plagued her throughout the contest. She also offered an apology to the crowd for her on-court behaviour during what was clearly a testing afternoon.
The numbers told a brutal story. Osaka racked up 41 unforced errors, with her backhand proving particularly unreliable. After taking the opening set comfortably, she lost her way entirely in the second as Mertens levelled proceedings.
With her left calf and ankle causing concern during the decider, Osaka called for a medical timeout. Rather than derailing her, the break appeared to reset her focus. She returned to break Mertens' serve and rode a wave of renewed momentum to close out the match.
Beyond the drama on court, Osaka also turned heads with another striking outfit. Former British number one Tim Henman described it as her best look yet at this year's tournament.
