Spain's football governing body has struck a deal with Madrid's Tambre clinic to offer egg freezing and fertility treatment to its players. The arrangement, which runs until 2029, covers all national team squads - including futsal players, referees, and federation staff.
The move sits within a broader push by the RFEF to make motherhood and elite sport less of an either-or proposition. The federation has already introduced policies letting players bring their children along to major tournaments - a perk later extended to the men's squad during their North American World Cup campaign.
Discussions with national team captains helped shape the initiative. Alexia Putellas, among others, raised the thorny issue of juggling professional careers with starting a family. She praised the agreement as a meaningful step for players who don't fancy choosing between goals and nappies, as ESPN reports.
The initiative hasn't escaped scrutiny. Spanish triple jumper Ana Peleteiro-Compaoré Brión questioned whether freezing eggs truly supports women wanting to become mothers - or simply delays the conversation.
