Aryna Sabalenka held off a gutsy Zhang Shuai before powering into the Toronto Masters round of 16, while Iga Swiatek breezed past Viktorija Golubic with barely a bead of sweat.
AIWorld number one Aryna Sabalenka needed just 76 minutes to dispatch Zhang Shuai at the WTA Toronto Masters, but the scoreline told only part of the story. The Belarusian was put under genuine pressure throughout the contest, particularly in the closing stages.
Serving for the match, Sabalenka found herself staring down a break point. She held her nerve, however, reeling off the final three points to clinch victory and book her spot in the last 16.
The result extended Sabalenka's dominant run against Zhang to five consecutive straight-sets wins, improving her head-to-head record to 5-1 on the WTA Tour.
Seventh seed Iga Swiatek made far lighter work of her assignment, dismantling Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 in 66 minutes. The Polish star struck 18 winners and conceded a mere 14 points on serve - a near-flawless display.
Sabalenka now faces 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, while Swiatek will take on 10th seed Marta Kostyuk in what promises to be a considerably sterner test.
