Coco Gauff has taken aim at the WTA Tour's gene testing policy, warning that the debate surrounding it has fuelled hostility towards the trans community. The American star made her feelings clear while speaking at the Canadian Open in Toronto, stressing the need for a far more considered conversation on the issue.

Fairness yes, animosity no

While Gauff acknowledged the importance of fair competition in women's sport, she was unequivocal in her stance against the negativity that has accompanied the policy rollout. She called for nuance rather than division, insisting the discourse should not come at the expense of marginalised groups.

What the policy involves

The WTA's new framework centres on a one-off test for the SRY gene - a marker linked to male-typical sex development. It is designed to draw a distinction between biological sex and gender identity, with provisions for certain medical conditions built in as exceptions.

Lack of transparency criticised

Gauff also questioned how the policy was communicated, suggesting that greater transparency was needed. Some players, she indicated, were caught off guard by the announcement, having had no prior knowledge of the initiative.

Tour divided on the issue

Fellow players have offered contrasting takes. Aryna Sabalenka suggested it would be unfair for women to compete against biological men, while Elena Rybakina took a more measured view, accepting the rationale behind testing but stopping short of calling it essential.
