The future of Formula 1 in Brazil is secured as the Sao Paulo Grand Prix will continue to thrill fans until at least 2030, thanks to a new five-year extension agreement.

This announcement reaffirms the race's presence on the F1 calendar, promising to extend the legacy of one of motorsport’s most storied venues, the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, more commonly known as Interlagos.

For over half a century, Interlagos has been synonymous with Formula 1 racing. Named in honor of the Brazilian driver José Carlos Pace, the 1975 race winner, the track is etched into the annals of F1 history. With a challenging 4.3km layout that consists of 15 turns, Interlagos is a track that tests the skills and nerves of drivers with a blend of high-speed sectors and technical corners. The design of this legendary circuit drew its initial inspiration from the renowned tracks in the UK, the United States, and France, and its features have been emulated in other racing circuits worldwide, not least the renowned Senna ‘S’ section.

The circuit is not just famous for its layout but also for the passionate Brazilian fans who create a carnival-like atmosphere every race weekend. This fervent backdrop has set the stage for many unforgettable Formula 1 highlights, such as the poignant victory of Ayrton Senna in 1991, Kimi Raikkonen's dramatic World Championship win in 2007, and the gripping showdown between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021.

The 2022 Grand Prix underscored Interlagos’ reputation for excitement and spectacle, drawing a staggering 235,000 spectators over the course of the event. That weekend witnessed George Russell’s maiden Grand Prix win, following his victory in the F1 Sprint, while Kevin Magnussen captured a surprising Pole Position — highlighting Interlagos’ capacity for unexpected drama.

The contract renewal comes on the heels of considerable investment in the Interlagos circuit, spearheaded by Sao Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes. These enhancements aim to transform the venue into a hub for diverse entertainment options, extending beyond racing to host large-scale music and cultural events.

In keeping with evolving standards, the Grand Prix has flourished under the stewardship of MC Brazil Motorsport, with support from Mubadala. This partnership has bolstered the fan experience and emphasized initiatives with a social conscience, notably the training of 100 women from underprivileged backgrounds as qualified mechanics, a milestone celebrated at the track.

Looking ahead, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix is set to occur from November 1-3 in the upcoming season, continuing to build on its proud tradition.

Formula 1's President & CEO Stefano Domenicali shared his enthusiasm for the extension: "I am delighted to announce we will be staying at Interlagos until 2030, and I can’t wait for many more years of the wonderful atmosphere that the Brazilian fans bring. Brazil has such a rich racing heritage, and this iconic circuit is a favourite of drivers and fans around the world. It embodies everything that is great about racing, and we look forward to seeing how it develops over the years to come to create an even better experience."

Mayor Nunes emphasized the broader implications of the extension: "The extension of the contract for the Formula 1 Grande Premio de Sao Paulo, broadcasted in approximately 180 countries, solidifies our city as a global leader in hosting major events with economic and social impact, generating jobs, revenue, and opportunities. Each year, we also advance our sustainability agenda, incorporating innovations to overcome challenges and bring more benefits to the city of Sao Paulo and Brazil."

Alan Adler, CEO of Sao Paulo Grand Prix, expressed his pride and commitment to the future: "It is a great honour to have the contract extension that ensures Sao Paulo's place on the Formula 1 calendar. This is the recognition of the work we have been doing, with the crucial support of the Sao Paulo City Hall. Continuing to be a partner of Formula 1 is a matter of great pride. Now, we will immediately start planning for the years ahead so that we can have even better Grand Prix editions in the coming years."

With the extension now official, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix is set to remain a jewel in the crown of Formula 1, blending the sport's rich history with forward-looking initiatives that promise to enhance the spectacle for years to come.
