Ferrari Dominates Interlagos Practice Session
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari secured the top spot in the practice session for the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, showcasing his and the team’s potential for the upcoming sprint race weekend.
With the unique sprint race format limiting teams to just a single hour of practice to finalize their strategies, the pressure was high, and Sainz, alongside his teammate Charles Leclerc, rose to the occasion.
As soon as the session kicked off, all 20 drivers were eager to hit the track, knowing all too well the constraints imposed by the ticking clock. The renowned Interlagos circuit was bustling with activity, with the drivers initially rolling out on Pirelli's durable hard tyre compound under dry conditions.

Defending world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull set the early pace with a lap time of 1m13.950s on the hard tyres, briefly leading the pack before his teammate Sergio Perez, who was keen to make a comeback after a disappointing outing in Mexico, showed his mettle. Both Red Bull drivers improved their times, but it was Verstappen who managed to edge out Perez, placing himself tentatively at the forefront.
As the session progressed, the timing screens were illuminated by Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri, signaling a switch to the medium tyre compound and setting a precedent for the rest of the field. This led to a reshuffling at the top, with Mercedes' George Russell and Red Bull's Verstappen exchanging leads, only to be interrupted by Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin making a surprising entrance to the top ranks on hard tyres.
The narrative took another turn when Kevin Magnussen, overcoming his travel delays, burst into the top three as one of the first drivers to venture out on the soft tyres. This opened the floodgates for a series of soft tyre runs, with the session's climax drawing near.
In a climactic twist, Sainz and his scarlet Ferrari set the Interlagos track ablaze, clocking in a 1m11.732s lap time on softs. Charles Leclerc wasn’t far behind, solidifying a Ferrari one-two and sending a clear signal of the team's intentions for the weekend.
The trailing pack, led by Russell, included notable performances by Nico Hulkenberg in the Haas and Alex Albon of Williams, who both demonstrated competitive pace. Meanwhile, Alonso slipped to the 11th spot, and Lewis Hamilton found himself in an uncharacteristic 12th position. Notably, Verstappen concluded the practice a full second slower than the leading Ferraris, a result of his choice to stick with hard tyres throughout the session.
The session was largely incident-free, though Lando Norris and Hulkenberg experienced a minor scrape, which brought Hulkenberg under the stewards' scrutiny. Later on, Hulkenberg faced a potential mechanical issue, signaling a premature end to his practice as he limped back to the pits.
