A comeback for the ages

Zheng Qinwen produced one of the most extraordinary fightbacks in recent US Open history, overturning a 5-0 deficit to defeat eighth seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 in New York.

The Chinese star saved set points while trailing before reeling off game after game to seize control - and never looked back, wrapping up the second set with clinical efficiency.

Making history as a qualifier

Zheng's stunning run has made her the first qualifier to reach the last eight at Flushing Meadows since Emma Raducanu's fairytale in 2021. Even more remarkably, this is not the first time she has dug herself out of a 5-0 hole this tournament - she performed the same escape act against 22nd seed Madison Keys in the third set of her previous round, winning seven consecutive games to advance.

Zheng now awaits the winner of the clash between Naomi Osaka and second seed Elena Rybakina for a place in the semi-finals. Elsewhere, French Open champion Mirra Andreeva beat 24th seed Anastasia Potapova and will face either fourth seed Coco Gauff or 14th seed Iva Jovic in the quarters.
