Swedish women's elite football is staring down a financial crisis. Both the main sponsor and the title sponsor of Elitfotboll dam (EFD) - the organisation overseeing the top tier - have opted against renewing their deals, leaving the Damallsvenskan without its two biggest commercial backers heading into next season.
The timing could hardly be worse. A significant number of clubs are already battling tight budgets, and the loss of headline sponsorship revenue threatens to deepen those difficulties. Newly appointed EFD chair Ylva Johansson acknowledged the gravity of the situation, pointing to the absence of signed agreements for the coming campaign as a particular worry.
EFD is now actively courting fresh commercial partners. A dedicated annual seminar pitched the appeal of women's football to prospective sponsors, with an emphasis on the sport's ability to connect with younger demographics through platforms such as TikTok. Every sponsorship contract expires at the end of this season - a scenario Johansson conceded was partly self-inflicted, the result of a previous restructuring proposal that was ultimately rejected, as Dagens Nyheter reports.
Off the pitch, the picture is equally challenging. After average matchday attendances rose in 2023, numbers have slipped back again in 2024. Johansson stressed that converting broader public interest into actual spectators at grounds must become a strategic priority if the league is to build a sustainable future.
