Mick Schumacher, the 24-year-old German racer, is set to embark on a new journey in his motorsport career.

After a challenging year on the sidelines as Mercedes’ reserve driver, Schumacher has signed with Alpine to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) next season. This move marks his first venture outside single-seater racing and is a significant shift in his career trajectory.

Schumacher's stint in Formula 1 was notable, spanning two seasons with the Haas team in 2021 and 2022. However, the lack of a full-time seat for the 2023 season led him to explore options outside of Formula 1. His decision comes amidst uncertainty in the F1 driver market, with Williams being the only team yet to finalize their lineup for 2024.

During his time away from the F1 grid, Schumacher kept himself involved in racing, notably participating in a test drive of Alpine’s A424 hypercar. His performance in this test impressed the team, leading to his inclusion in their WEC lineup alongside Nicolas Lapierre, Matthieu Vaxiviere, Charles Milesi, Paul-Loup Chatin, and Ferdinand Habsburg.

Reflecting on his new path, Schumacher expressed excitement and a sense of anticipation. “A new chapter is beginning for me with Alpine in the FIA WEC hypercar category,” he stated. The transition from single-seaters to a closed cockpit and covered wheels presents a unique opportunity for Schumacher to expand his driving prowess.

Schumacher's passion for racing has been unwavering, even during his year off the track. “I sorely missed racing this year; it’s what I’ve loved to do since I was a kid, and it was sometimes difficult to watch the other drivers take to the track," he shared. His move to endurance racing with Alpine offers not only a return to active racing but also a chance to tackle new challenges and create memorable moments.

Mick Schumacher will also stay on as reserve driver for Mercedes F1 for the 2024 season

Bruno Famin, VP of Alpine Motorsports, recognized Schumacher's potential, noting his speed, reliability, team spirit, and racing acumen as qualities that make him a valuable addition to the team. Famin believes that although it's Schumacher’s first foray into endurance racing, his enthusiasm and determination will make him a significant asset.

Alpine is set to unveil their full crews and the official livery of the A424 at a launch event on February 7, 2024. The event will set the stage for the upcoming WEC season, where Schumacher will showcase his talents in a new arena.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has confirmed that Schumacher will continue his role as their F1 reserve driver for 2024. He will support regular racers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in a combined program, balancing his commitments between Formula 1 and the World Endurance Championship. This dual role highlights Schumacher's adaptability and dedication to motorsport, marking a pivotal moment in his career.
