World number one Aryna Sabalenka needed every ounce of grit to get past qualifier Talia Gibson at the Cincinnati Masters on Saturday, eventually prevailing 6-2, 7-6 (2) in a match that stretched to an hour and 52 minutes.
With temperatures pushing close to 90°F and gusty winds wreaking havoc on ball trajectories, conditions were far from ideal. Sabalenka, though, powered through with an impressive 30 winners - 13 of them aces.
The opening set was relatively straightforward, but Gibson turned the contest on its head in the second. The Australian broke Sabalenka's serve and then saved five consecutive match points to force a tiebreak, showing remarkable composure under pressure.
It took a sixth match point for Sabalenka to finally close the door. She flipped a switch in the breaker, rattling off six of seven points with clean winners to seal the deal.
Sabalenka now faces Wang Xinyu in the third round, a player she has beaten once before - at the 2022 Australian Open. That 1-0 head-to-head advantage will offer some comfort, though on a day like Saturday, nothing came easy for the top seed.
