From a modest studio on the second floor of an Episcopal church in Queens, artist Pau Tiu has been pouring energy into a passion project - designing bold, eye-catching posters in support of Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala. The prints, adorned with bright yellow tennis balls and rallying cries, have become a symbol of community pride.
Just four miles from Tiu's workspace, Eala has been writing her own story at the US Open. The young Filipino star secured a debut victory over Mary Stoiana before powering past Oleksandra Oliynykova to reach the third round. Fans in the stands brandished signs reading "Laban Alex" - Tagalog for "Fight, Alex" - turning sections of the crowd into a sea of Filipino support.
Tiu relocated to the US two years ago alongside wife Felize Camille, setting up a creative studio for art and workshops. Watching Eala's rise on court sparked something deeper, inspiring a run of custom posters rooted in Filipino design traditions.
After completing the latest batch, Tiu sent the digital files to a brother back in the Philippines, where identical posters were printed and distributed among fans at home. It is a neat illustration of the cross-border devotion Eala now commands - from New York to Manila, the backing is unmistakable.
