Mercedes is addressing some major setup flaws that compromised their performance during the nightmarish Brazil Grand Prix. With the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix on the horizon, Mercedes aims to rectify their issues and get back to competitive form. George Russell has expressed confidence in Mercedes' ability to correct their recent setbacks and avoid stumbling at the first hurdle in the upcoming seasons.

Mercedes' Struggles in Brazil

Mercedes' recent struggles in Brazil left them searching for answers. Team Principal Toto Wolff described it as one of their worst weekends, emphasizing the need to identify the setup issues that plagued their performance. While Mercedes had shown promise with a new floor upgrade in Austin, questions arose about its legality. However, their car performed well in Mexico, where it was deemed legal, indicating that the upgrade had potential.

The Brazilian Grand Prix, a circuit that should have suited Mercedes, turned into a disaster due to tire wear issues. The rear tires were getting excessively worn, leading to understeer into corners. In the end, they could only secure a few points, with Lewis Hamilton finishing in 8th place and George Russell suffering a DNF due to an engine failure.

Mercedes' Understanding of the Problem

Mercedes is determined to understand what went wrong in Brazil. Toto Wolff stated, "Brazil was probably our most difficult weekend of the season, and we have been hard at work to identify the wrong turn we took with the setup." This acknowledgment points to a setup-related issue rather than a fundamental flaw with the car itself. The team's willingness to address the problem head-on demonstrates their commitment to improvement.

However, it's worth noting that identifying the issue was no easy task for Mercedes. They even considered breaking Park Ferme regulations to change the setup before the Grand Prix. Still, they ultimately decided against it, as they weren't confident in knowing what changes to make. This highlights the complexity of the situation.

Looking Ahead to the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix

The F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix presents a unique set of challenges. The track is expected to have limited grip due to the absence of feeder series and other motorsports activities. Cold temperatures, with a potential drop to 12°C during the race, could further complicate matters. The tire temperatures may struggle to reach the ideal range, especially with engines running flat out for extended periods.

The possibility of showers during qualifying and the race itself adds an element of unpredictability. With the pit exit and cool temperatures, the race could turn chaotic. While Max Verstappen is the favorite to win, the circumstances make it an intriguing event to watch.

Russell mentioned that they've gained valuable insights over the years, which will guide them in developing a more competitive car. While he doesn't claim they will have the fastest car on the grid, he believes they won't encounter the same early-season struggles they've faced recently.
