McLaren Secures Mercedes Power Until 2030

In a strategic move ensuring continuity and stability, McLaren has extended its partnership with Mercedes, confirming the use of Mercedes power units in their Formula 1 cars until 2030.

This decision marks a significant commitment by McLaren to maintain a competitive edge in the ever-evolving landscape of Formula 1 racing.

McLaren, a renowned British racing team, has a longstanding relationship with Mercedes, having previously utilized their power units from 1995 to 2014, and more recently since 2021. The existing agreement was set to expire in 2025, but the impending introduction of new power unit regulations in 2026, emphasizing enhanced electrical power, prompted an early and decisive action by both parties.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, expressed his confidence in Mercedes-Benz as a "brilliant and reliable partner." He highlighted the shared success in recent seasons and during their previous collaboration, underlining the importance of this extended partnership in the face of upcoming regulatory changes.

Since rejoining forces with Mercedes, following less fruitful partnerships with Honda and Renault, McLaren has witnessed a notable upturn in their Formula 1 fortunes. The team clinched victory at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, a significant achievement as the most recent win by any customer team in Formula 1. Additionally, McLaren has secured 15 podium finishes and impressive performances in the F1 Sprint events in Brazil and Qatar, showcasing their emergence as a formidable force, second only to Red Bull in terms of raw pace in the latter half of the current season.

Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the confidence and stability this renewed agreement with Mercedes brings. He praised Mercedes for their support in McLaren's journey back to the front of the grid and expressed gratitude for their continued collaboration.

This extension positions McLaren as Mercedes' first customer under the new 2026 regulations, alongside the eight-time world champion Mercedes works team. The Silver Arrows, Mercedes' in-house team, remain committed to nurturing strong customer relationships as they aim to become the leading power unit supplier in Formula 1.

Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, underscored the strategic importance of collaborating with robust customer teams. He noted that such partnerships provide competitive benchmarks, accelerate technical learning, and reinforce the overall Formula 1 business case for Mercedes-Benz. Wolff also commended McLaren for their competitive spirit and fair play since 2021, emphasizing the critical role of transparent and equal supply to all customer teams in fostering a competitive environment where all ten teams can realistically aspire for podium finishes.
