The 2023 Formula 1 season has been a challenging one for Haas, culminating in a performance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that Kevin Magnussen described as the only positive being "that it was the last race."

This stark assessment underlines the team's struggle throughout the year, with Haas propping up the constructors' standings.

The season began with a glimmer of hope as Haas managed three points finishes in the first five races. However, the team's fortunes dwindled, with only one more score in the subsequent 17 races, marking a steady decline to the bottom of the F1 standings. Magnussen, after finishing 20th in the Yas Marina finale, pinpointed a significant issue: the team's development pace or lack thereof, in stark contrast to their rivals.

Reflecting on the season, Magnussen highlighted the stark reality: "It’s not been a good year for us. We’ve not developed at the rate we should have, or we haven’t developed at all." This lack of progress, particularly in the development race against competitors, has been a critical factor in Haas's disappointing year.

Despite the setbacks, Magnussen remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming winter period for the team to catch up. His teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, shared a similar sentiment, despite experiencing a decline from a top 10 qualifying position to finishing 15th in the final race. Hulkenberg found solace in his renewed passion and hunger for racing, despite the team's sporting challenges.

Haas's struggle wasn't just confined to individual performances but was evident in their overall standings. With just 12 points, they lagged behind Alfa Romeo, Alpha Tauri, and Williams, who managed to score 16, 25, and 28 points, respectively. This gap underscores the team's need for significant improvements.

Looking ahead, both Magnussen and Hulkenberg are focused on the potential for growth and improvement in the upcoming season. Their comments reflect a team aware of its shortcomings but determined to turn the tide. As the F1 world watches, Haas faces a critical "big winter," pivotal for its future success and a potential comeback in the fiercely competitive arena of Formula 1 racing.
