Coco Gauff has been handed a walkover into the National Bank Open semifinals after Belinda Bencic withdrew from their scheduled quarterfinal on Tuesday with a hip injury.

Gauff now awaits the winner of the evening clash between Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka, who were due on Stadium Court no earlier than 7:30 p.m.

Bencic's run ends early

It is a frustrating exit for Bencic, the 2015 Toronto champion, who had battled past Sloane Stephens, Taylor Townsend, and Alexandra Eala to reach the last eight. However, the Swiss player had been carrying the injury throughout the tournament, with heavy taping visible on her leg during matches.

Following her win over Stephens, Bencic admitted she had been unsure whether she would even compete in Toronto, revealing the issue had required extra management since Wimbledon. Despite those doubts, she said she was pleased with how far she had gone.

What's next

Bencic is expected to return for the Cincinnati event. Gauff, meanwhile, will contest her first semifinal at this tournament on Wednesday, with a place in Thursday's final at stake.
