Gauff grinds past Badosa

Coco Gauff marched into the third round of the US Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Paula Badosa - a result that tilts their head-to-head record to 5-4 in the American's favour.

It was far from straightforward. Badosa's backhand caused problems throughout, but Gauff's serve proved the decisive weapon, highlighted by a searing 115 mph ace. A costly Badosa error at a pivotal moment handed Gauff the break she needed to pocket the opening set.

The second set was tighter still, with Gauff forced to dig deep before clinching the tiebreak to seal the contest in straight sets. Her previous win over Badosa came at the 2024 China Open, making this a long-awaited follow-up.

Bucsa awaits

Next up for Gauff is Spain's Cristina Bucsa, who earned her place with a gruelling three-set triumph over Japan's Himeno Sakatsume. The win marks the fourth time Bucsa has reached the third round of a Grand Slam.
