Cathy Engelbert is set to leave her role as WNBA commissioner when the year closes out, with 31 December confirmed as her final day. The retirement was revealed last Friday, timed during the FIBA World Cup break.
Engelbert's time in charge was not without friction. Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier publicly questioned the commissioner's capabilities - remarks Engelbert denied - and the relationship between league leadership and players remained tense throughout.
Still, the departing commissioner oversaw notable financial growth and steered two collective bargaining agreements through to ratification.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has informed league stakeholders that the formal process to identify Engelbert's replacement will kick off later this month. Engelbert herself has handed a shortlist of potential successors to Silver and the WNBA Board of Governors.
Among the names being floated are former player Swin Cash and current Seattle Storm forward and former WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike. The league appears open-minded about its options, with insiders stressing the importance of finding someone who can genuinely connect with players and build consensus among owners.
Whoever steps into the role will inherit a league in rapid growth mode - but one that clearly needs a more hands-on, culturally attuned leader at the helm.
