Dominant display in New York

Elena Rybakina made light work of Jessica Bouzas Maneiro at the US Open on Thursday, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 victory in just 68 minutes. The second seed looked in imperious form, unleashing powerful groundstrokes and serves throughout - and showing no trace of any recent injury concerns.

World No. 1 within reach

The win moves Rybakina into the third round and, crucially, within three victories of claiming the world No. 1 ranking. A place in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows would be enough to guarantee her the top spot by the tournament's conclusion.

Tricky test awaits

Standing in her path next is Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva - a dangerous opponent who has already knocked out Maria Sakkari this fortnight. More worryingly for Rybakina, Starodubtseva beat her at Roland Garros earlier this year. It promises to be a stern examination of Rybakina's title credentials.
