In a candid conversation on Ben Foster's podcast ‘Fozcast’, former Arsenal physiotherapist Gary Lewin shed light on a bold decision the club made regarding the purchase and subsequent sale of a player.

Lewin, with his vast experience spanning 22 years at Arsenal, has seen the club through many highs, including the invincible season of 2003/04 and the memorable journey to the Champions League final. In 2008, he transitioned to the England national team but would later return to the North London club's women's side.

During the podcast, Lewin recounted the series of events surrounding this players time at Arsenal. The player in question is Marc Overmars, who joined from Ajax and was later sold to Barcelona.

The club, in an audacious move, purchased the celebrated international footballer for a sum of £5million, fully aware that he had endured a cruciate injury just 18 months earlier. Arsenal's thorough medical examination, complemented by insights from an orthopaedic surgeon, indicated early signs of knee degeneration. The projection was that Overmars might maintain his elite performance levels for just another three to four years before his knee condition would decline.

The club's management, led by the iconic Arsene Wenger, however, decided to go ahead with the acquisition. Wenger perceived the medical insights not as a deterrent but as valuable foresight and information he could use at a later stage. Overmars, defying many expectations, was instrumental in clinching several trophies for Arsenal in the subsequent two and a half years.

Lewin's recollection on the Fozcast was, "We signed a player for about £5million - a well-known international player. He had a cruciate injury 18 months before we signed him. We did a full medical on him... the surgeon said 'He's got early signs of degeneration of the knee... you will get three or four years out of him at this level, then that knee will start to degenerate'. So we went back to the board, spoke to the manager, and he said 'We're going to sign him, that's great information to have, I will use that in the future'. Two and a half years later, we'd won a few trophies and he was a big part of that. We then sold him to another European club for £25m. 18 months after that he retired."

The story ends with Overmars' move to Barcelona, another European footballing giant for a staggering £25million. Sadly, not long after this transfer, Overmars hung up his boots due to the injury to his knee.

Marc Overmars' tenure at Arsenal is fondly remembered for his blistering speed and crucial goals, and his time at the club remains a testament to the blending of audacious management decisions with on-field brilliance.
