Elena Rybakina has climbed to the summit of the WTA rankings after powering past Zheng Qinwen in the US Open quarterfinals. The Kazakh star lost the opening set 3-6 before storming back to take the match 6-1, 6-4 - and with it, the world No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career.
Born in Moscow but competing under the Kazakh flag, the 27-year-old has been knocking on the door of the top spot for some time. A consistent top-five presence over recent years, Rybakina's 2026 campaign has been nothing short of outstanding. She clinched the Australian Open earlier this season - her second Grand Slam title - and added the Stuttgart Tennis Grand Prix to her growing trophy cabinet, WTA reports.
With 47 match wins this year - second only to Jessica Pegula's 50 on the WTA tour - Rybakina has been a model of reliability while rivals around her traded places at the top. That steadiness has now paid the ultimate dividend.
Rybakina will meet either Coco Gauff or Mirra Andreeva in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows. On the other side of the draw, dethroned No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka faces Pegula for a place in the final.
