Shockingly enough, the door for Champions League football remains open for Liverpool after both Manchester United and Newcastle dropped points recently. How do the rest of the matches look for the teams fighting for the illustrious top 4 spot?

After the season Liverpool have had it is unbelievable that there is still a chance for Champions League football next season.

There are still several dominos that must fall the right way for that to happen, but Newcastle and Man United tasting defeat against Arsenal and West Ham respectively is a start.

Liverpool has two games remaining on their schedule (Aston Villa, and Southampton) after their stunning victory against relegation-threatened Leicester.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side need to win both remaining games and hope their rivals drop points, but what are the permutations and who do they each play?

Manchester United:

  • Bournemouth (A)

  • Chelsea (H)

  • Fulham (H)

Man United currently occupy fourth spot and sit only one point above Liverpool having played a game less.

They need to drop points in two of their remaining three games for Liverpool to be able to take that fourth spot if they win their own games.

It does not matter if United draws twice, loses twice, or has a combination of both – although two defeats or more would go down a treat – as Liverpool have a much better goal difference (+17).

The bottom line is if United accumulate nine or more points from here on out, Liverpool cannot overtake them in the table.

Newcastle:

  • Brighton (H)

  • Leicester (H)

  • Chelsea (A)

The Magpies are currently third on equal points with Manchester United with a significantly better goal difference (+32). On paper it may seem like they have a more difficult run of fixtures.

Brighton:

  • Newcastle (A) – (3rd)

  • Southampton (H) – (20th)

  • Man City (H) – (1st)

  • Aston Villa (A) – (8th)

Brighton has had a wonderful season but has been written off by many as they lie in 6th place with 58 points at the moment. However, they still have to games in hand on Liverpool, and if they are to win against both Newcastle and Southampton, it fully opens the door for Champions League football.

It is a tough ask for them to win all their remaining fixtures but if they did, they would finish on 70 points.
