Vacant Manager Positions: Who Could Fill Them?
The Premier League is in a unique position where there are currently three teams without a permanent manager. Following the departures of Antonio Conte for Tottenham, Brendan Rodgers for Leicester, and Graham Potter for Chelsea, all clubs are in the process of finding new managers. We’ll take a look at managers currently out a job.
Zinedine Zidane
Has not been working since the 27th og May 2021, when he left Real Madrid at the end of the season. Had a 65,5% win rate during his two stints with the club, being in charge for a total of 263 games. He has won 11 trophies as a manager, including the Club World Cup, La Liga, Champions League, and the Spanish Cup. An extremely wanted man who is capable of bringing the best out of any team he takes over.
Antonio Conte
Sacked by Tottenham the 26th of March this year. Ended with a 54% win rate, and was in charge for 76 games. A known figure in the Premier League, and is a premier league winner with Chelsea from the 16/17 season.
Brendan Rodgers
Sacked by Leicester the 2nd of April this year. Was at the helm for 4 years, and is credited with creating some of the best football Leicester has played. Has been up and down, but has had a disappointing 22/23 season, with Leicester currently in the relegation zone in 19th place.
Graham Potter
Transformed Brighton into a winning team, finding uncut gems and turning them to diamonds along the way. Really didn’t work out with Chelsea, being sacked after just 31 games, ending with a 39% win rate.
Mauricio Pochettino
Sacked from PSG in July last year, Pochettino won the French cup and the Ligue 1 during his time with the club. Gaining experience from managing the likes of Lionel Messi, Mbappe and Neymar, the Spurs board might be tempted to give him another go at the helm.
During his previous five years at Tottenham, he guided the team to both a league cup and Champions League final, as well a second-place finish in the league. His last match in charge was in November 2019. Is currently 5/1 odds for the Spurs job, and 10/1 for the Chelsea job.
Julian Nagelsmann
Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern München after one-and-a-half seasons in charge. The timing of the sacking came as a surprise to many, considering Bayern are in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and the German Cup, as well as second place in the league.
Nagelsmann’s progressive and flexible tactics might be exactly what Spurs needs in the coming future. He is also renowned for his work with young players.
A world class manager at just 35 years of age, Nagelsmann is attracting interest from Chelsea, Tottenham, PSG, and Real Madrid, and he could be a huge asset were he appointed for one of the Premier League jobs. Currently odds favourite for the Chelsea job at 10/11, and is rumoured to have a great relationship with Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.
Luis Enrique
Following a disappointing 2022 World Cup, Luis Enrique was given the axe by Spain last December. The spaniard has an impressive CV, with previous employment as the manager of Barcelona. Winning nine trophies during his time with the Catalan giants, he steered Barcelona to both Champions League and La Liga victory.
He has yet to try his hand at the Premier League, and could be the man to achieve greatness with Spurs or Chelsea. Currently sits at a 12/1 odds for the Chelsea job.
Marcelo Bielsa
Leeds hero that departed Leeds in february 2022. 170 games in charge, ended with a 47.6% win rate. Hailed as one of the most influential managers of all time. Credited with transforming Leeds and pulling them out of the Championship and back in to the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi
Graham Potter’s replacement after Potter left for Chelsea has taken Brighton to new heights, as they sit seventh in the Premier League. De Zerbi has gotten Brighton supporters to dream of Europe with his attacking style of football. Destined for a bigger club if he continues his positive trajectory, Tottenham and Chelsea are keeping a keen eye on the Italian.
Andre Villas-Boas
Has racked up some Premier League experience with both Chelsea and Tottenham, though both stints were quite underwhelming. It’s been 9 years since we last saw the Portuguese man in English football. Tried his hand in the Russian, Chinese, and French leagues since. Last with Marseille, sacked on the 2nd of February 2021.
