Newcastle United delivered a jaw-dropping performance that will be etched in Premier League history. Facing newly promoted Sheffield United, the Magpies found the back of the net eight times.

Showing the sheer determination and willpower Newcastle United has, assistant manager Jason Tindall' handed a note to Sean Longstaff with 15 minutes left of the game and the score 7-0. Minutes after receiving the note, Newcastle's Alexander Isak netted the eighth goal of the match, securing Newcastle's largest-ever away win and condemning Sheffield United to their record home loss. But it was not just the magnitude of the win that made this game historic; it was the fact that eight different players found the back of the net—a Premier League first.

In a single afternoon, Newcastle doubled their goal tally for the season, leaving fans and pundits in awe. What was supposed to be a test of Newcastle's ability to rotate players, as head coach Eddie Howe fielded an entirely new front three compared to their recent Champions League clash with AC Milan, turned into a different kind of challenge. Players throughout the squad embraced the opportunity, making their mark in a historic performance.

The groundwork for this victory was laid well in advance, with Howe's meticulous preparations beginning even before the Milan trip. The bitter memory of a previous loss at Bramall Lane in January 2021 served as a stark reminder of what could happen if they underestimated their opponents. Lessons learned from that defeat drove Newcastle's success last season, particularly against lower-ranked teams.

Today we were ruthless
— Eddie Howe

Sunday's incredible performance was not just about securing a win; it was about reaffirming their ruthless attitude. As Howe emphasized, "Today we were ruthless and kept looking to score." Maintaining that mentality was crucial for Newcastle, and they did so emphatically.

Callum Wilson, one of the standout performers, epitomized this hunger for goals. Despite a 3-0 lead at halftime, he went into the break frustrated with missed opportunities. His relief came just 11 minutes into the second half when he found the back of the net. The unexpected contributors added to the spectacle. Sven Botman scored his first goal for Newcastle, showcasing his determination. Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, and Bruno Guimaraes also joined the goal-scoring party.

Anthony Gordon, in particular, shone brightly, demonstrating why Newcastle invested £40 million to secure his services from Everton in January. His curling shot left goalkeeper Wes Foderingham grasping at thin air. Longstaff's goal also had its moments of controversy, with Sheffield United fans questioning a potential handball in the build-up. Still, it stood, adding to the already overwhelming scoreline. As the match reached its climax, Alexander Isak added the final strike in the 87th minute. His composure and skill showcased a team determined to keep scoring, regardless of the scoreline.

To share the goals around is great… and there were some really important ones for the individuals as well
— Eddie Howe

Head coach Eddie Howe summed up the day's events: "We shared them around today. I didn't realize that (we had eight different scorers) until after the game. To share the goals around is great… and there were some really important ones for the individuals as well."

So, what lies ahead for this resurgent Newcastle side? After a week of remarkable firsts, including their first Champions League game in 20 years and a record-breaking away win, the team faces new challenges.

This season has seen Newcastle's identity waver, from demolishing teams like Aston Villa and Sheffield United to humbling losses against Liverpool and Brighton. However, this 8-0 victory serves as a reminder that Newcastle possesses the ruthless streak needed to succeed. In the relentless grind of European and domestic football, teams with top-four aspirations must efficiently dispatch certain matches. Newcastle must transform their newfound brutality into a banality, where victory becomes routine.

Already, the coaching staff's insistence on pushing for an eighth goal at 7-0 up shows signs of this evolving philosophy. With their newfound belief and killer instinct, Newcastle could be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses.
