Hamilton Voices Support as Andretti Races Towards F1 Entry

Lewis Hamilton recently vocalized his encouragement for Michael Andretti's potential induction into Formula 1, describing the move as "great" for the championship.

The FIA confirmed this week that the Andretti application had cleared the initial stages of the entry procedure.

F1 is now primed for a commercial dialogue, centering mostly on how this could affect the financial dynamics of the existing 10 teams.

In a scenario where many drivers are reticent to publicly endorse the Cadillac-sponsored Andretti venture due to concerns from current team leaders, Hamilton was candid, albeit aware of potential disagreements. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Hamilton stated, "I think it's great. In F1, I've often felt we could do with more cars on the grid. Of course, not everyone will be pleased with my backing, but I see it as an opening for additional employment. There's also room for potentially another female driver, leading to more opportunities. It could make the races even more thrilling."

Max Verstappen resonated with Hamilton's sentiment but also highlighted the contrasting viewpoints of teams and drivers. "From a driver's standpoint, it's all positive," the Dutch driver remarked. "But, understanding the team's perspective, I can see their reservations. Ultimately, the FIA, the FOM, and the teams are privy to more intricate details, making this a complex decision."

Fernando Alonso, who previously raced under Andretti in the 2017 Indy 500, chose to align with his team's stance. He commented, "Andretti is a splendid team. Having Michael onboard F1 would be significant. But, the power to decide rests with higher-ups, primarily the FIA, then the FOM, and the teams. I admire Michael and his outfit, but I'll also respect and support whatever direction Aston Martin chooses."

Lastly, Valtteri Bottas did not hesitate in expressing his full support for expanding the grid. The Finn reminisced about his childhood days, watching the races, "More cars simply mean more entertainment and chances for emerging drivers. I believe it's always a plus to have more teams. Although there's a certain resistance, I feel the sport could benefit from such additions."
